Our First Party!

We hosted our first party, a Post-Christmas party at the dream house and we were delighted to have our closest family and friends to share the moment with us!
We were happy that they shared this occasion to thank the Lord for blessing us with the means and the perseverance to build this house. They were really the ones we wanted to share this joy with. My friends were the same set of people who helped us shovel mud out of this house. They were the same ones who never let us lose hope in this home. I wish my sister and her family was here to, but she was sick. But I know that she is very happy for me for having this house.
My husband, happily sharing the moment with his friends. If he could burst with pride, he would! Below are some pictures of our family travels to adorn the walls.
And of course, he had to buy this dining set in time before the first guests arrive. I call this dining set my belated Christmas gift from my husband for me. Pictured here also is my mother's day rice cooker. If you notice, I am not much into gifts for myself but I enjoy immensely gifts for the house!
This is my dream house. It is not yet done, but the dream is well on track. We hope to share with our families and friends more happy occasion in this home.
We hope that this continuing story of how we are trying to go for our dream inspire people out there to continue dreaming and working to get it, no matter what. Merry Christmas and Happy New year, everyone!

Next Project: Ceiling

This is going to be our next project for the house and it will cost us around P20-25K. I wanted to spend some more of our 13th month pay for this but we hesitated at the last minute because we might end up eating at the neighbor's house during Noche Buena! Ha ha!

So I guess we might postpone this to first quarter of next year. I think by summer, we will really need that ceiling to protect us from the blistering heat of March and April!

By the way, the kids loved how the house turned out and my husband and I just loved how they said "Wow" when they first entered the house. It was all worth it!

Online Christmas Shopping

Its only 12 days before Christmas but I have not begun my shopping! I have not made a list yet, let alone check it twice! I have been so busy with the house so I was really not into shopping this year. Besides, most of our Christmas pay has been used in the house already. But what with the kids making a countdown and the over all atmosphere of the season being laid upon us, I cant just wait till the season is done before I do my shopping. But since we are so busy at weekends with parties and I don't have to go to malls and bazaars to my shopping, I will do most of it online! I found the perfect site for it already and I know that I will be done with most of my list today. I feel so lucky when my friend told me about Sierra Trading Post free shipping code since I would need the extra saving on this. A free shipping promo code is very important because the money that I would otherwise spend on paying for rush shipping can be used to buy more gifts to cross out on my list! So if you need Sierra Trading Post free shipping codes, please feel free to grab them here!So bye for now because I think I just saw this lovely lamp that would look divine in my house!

All I want for my kids

Last night while watching a movie on TV, we saw the Coliseum in Rome and my husband said he dream of going there one day. He said to my 8-year old son to buy us tickets to Rome when he is old and working already and while we can still walk. I smiled at my husband because we were thinking of the same thing. My little girl piped in and asked what we want from her when she is big already and I said I just want her to be happy. She insisted and so I told her I want her to be a nurse and in my mind, I was already seeing her in those cute nursing uniforms. I was already thinking of buying her several sets of nursing scrubs tops and I was already bursting with pride just thinking about it! I just wish that when that time comes, it is still easy to look for medical uniform store that sells quality garments. I don't know if my daughter would really want to be a nurse one day but in my heart I know that she can be a good one. She is caring and sweet and has compassion for people. I just wish that she will not change when she gets older and there are more distractions in her life. I cant get over my image of her on one of those medical scrubs and uniforms. And I was still smiling as they moved on to another topic.

Proud as a Mother Hen!

This is my house now and I am as proud as a mother hen! All our efforts have paid off and I am loving how my house is now. Of course, since this is a work in progress, there are still a lot of things that need to done but I will worry about all of them later. I will just enjoy my home!

My beautiful blue bathroom!
And tiled floor outside. Okay, it still has to be cleaned but I wanted to take pictures already.
See, we are very near our dream of building this house. All it takes is a lot of patience and a lot of prayers and a lot of faith.

Almost Over!

The current phase of the construction of our dream house is almost over. The floors are tiled already, except for some that has to be repeated because of damage.

This is the kitchen and it is almost done, except for the grout. We are still saving up for the cabinets so that will have to do for now. A closer view of the kitchen top below. This is going to be the dining area. The serving counter near the window is my husband's request and it still has to be tiled to match the kitchen counter. This is the rest room. The lavatory at the right has yet to be installed.
This is the terrace that is not yet finished until now. I hope it will be done this week so we can finally enjoy our home.
This phase is almost over and then we will save some more to begin construction of the ceiling and the cabinets. Hay, this is really a never-ending process but I love how our dream house is turning out. This is really the product of our sweat, blood and tears and I love it to bits!

My House or My Body?

I am such in a state of excitement over the improvement in our house that I have been ignoring my body lately. I am okay with being covered in paint while painting under the glaring sun just for the sheer love of this dream house! I have stopped going to the gym for a week now and I know I look like I need a mini tummy tuck already. Since I am always tired, I eat a lot, hence the bloating, ha ha! If I had the money to spare, I would go for a California breast augmentation or a California liposuction, seriously! I am as vain as the next girl but maybe more practical than most so I give priority to building the house. Most of our 13th month pay will be spent in the house so I will only be able to spend some money for my hair re bonding. That is the only thing that I am getting for myself this year and I am not complaining. I am betting on the lotto tonight and I win the 450 million peso jackpot, I just may get that liposuction and the breast augmentation done in California, USA!

A Temporary Garden

How will I prevent the space in front of my house from being the neighborhood's trash bin? Well, I have to keep it clean of course! This was the before photo, or after Ondoy, or during the construction. All the mud that we scooped from the house were dumped here, and the neighborhood followed suit!
So one weekend that we were there, we cleaned it up and it looked a lot better after. It was no easy task because my husband was at work and it was just, my sister Kris and my eldest son who did the grueling work!
But the neighbor's front yard looked like this! But I cant put plants here that would require watering since we only come during weekends. So my solution, to prevent having the front of my house from becoming dirty again, and yet need not worry about taking care of them, I planted these. And look what I found from all those rubbish? A Mango tree!

So this is my temporary garden. I hope to plant better looking plants once we move in.

All About Tiles

Here is the section of my house that is begging to be tiled, the kitchen and the bathroom. The portions that were not painted white will be tiled with below choices. We are just waiting for a good rate from a refutable handyman.
This 8x8 tile will be the flooring for the bathroom. At P11 each, its is cheaper in Handyman than in tile stores in Montalban and Marikina.
It was a choice between these 8x12 tiles for the walls of the bathroom, but the later won because of the price. This one below is P33 each, while the other one is only P13.50. I guess we will just choose a nice border to compliment the simple tulip design.

I am still unable to decide as to the color of the kitchen tiles because when you are facing so many designs, it is very difficult to choose. So what we did was to agree on the color (blue) and price range (P12-P15) and then we will just buy what we want once we get the quotation for labor from the handyman. I am so excited to see how this will turn out!

Purple and Pink Rooms

The problem with D-I-Y in painting your own house is that you know nothing. You don't know how much wall space a liter of paint will really cover. It says there in the can that a liter of paint will cover 1.6 meters of wall, you believe it and then you ran out of paint on a Sunday when all paint stores are closed! So you end up with traveling an hour to go to your house, hoping to finish the two rooms and have it look beautifully pink and purple, only to ran out of it an hour since you started. You also realize that Light Wisteria and Valentine Pink, though they are cute enough colors, are not that popular and that some paint stores offer them by order only! The good thing is you learn, the rooms will be done by next week, and you will have excess paint to color the pots!

The View From My Office

I look out to this view everyday in my office ad I have to thank God for the beauty of His creation. Its a beautiful sight, even when its dark with rain clouds or black from smog. And to see the Manila Bay sunset is always a blessing. Of course, I can also see the mundane traffic and tell my friends to avoid these areas, ha ha. Anyway, this is such a beautiful sight, even at night.

But I wouldnt want to live in a building as tall as this. I still want a house, with a lot on land. If I should buy a condominium, it will be as an investment and to rent it out but not for me and my family to live. Remember the movie 2012?

The House I Will Buy

If I had the money, I will buy this house. For me, this is the perfect house especially if it has 5 rooms. Since I have 3 kids and my mother and sister, then it will fit all of us comfortably. But then again, I will buy this, if I have the money which at the moment, I don't have.

Well, my mother is playing the lotto daily so I hope she wins and we can buy this dream house. Excuse me, that was just me dreaming again.

Ondoy: One Year After

This was how it looked like one year ago after Ondoy. You can see the direction of the flood and the depth of the mud. At the first sight of this devastation, I wanted to cry but realized we were lucky not to have been at this home when it happened.

This was the back of the house which we haven't extended then. We had a gate at the back but we had no ceiling yet.

See the footprints? We were looted too. They took the gas tank, the gas burners, the caldero and the kawali! There was also a plastic storage box that was taken, with the clothes left on the mud.

And those are my precious sofas, submerged in mud.

And here is the dream house now, one year after. We received a little money from the insurance and we used it to build the house and some. And if you ask us what we used to build this house, lakas ng loob would be our answer! We painted it a white coat just last week. The grills have yet to be painted and the kids want them pink! But I want to keep it green, as a reminder of what this home has been through.

The sofa is dusty, but it will survive another washing. The curtains will stay, as they have proven their worth! The dirty small table was used during the clean up as an eating table and it has also stayed to be used further. A little coat of paint will the trick!

And these are the two rooms after the extension. We will paint it a cream color or beige next time and the color of the doors are still under negotiation, ha ha.

This is the whole view of the sala and dining area, without any partitions yet. We have no ceiling yet and the kitchen and bathroom are still to be tiled but we are confient that we can build this
house slowly and surely. With a little luck and a lot of faith!

So this is our dream house. Its not really much, but its home! And we are literally building it from scratch.

Building A Website

Building a website is much like building your own house. You take the time to study the best possible deal and then go with where you can get the best value for your money. You dont just settle for the first one you see. You listen to referrals and reviews and word of mouth endorsements. The same thing when you are looking for a web host. You read reviews and you ask friends what they are using and if they satisfied. Then you try and haggle for discount and other freebies. Or you wait for free hosting or free coupons. Or you can ask for a free trial and only when you are satisfied will you commit to get their service. So if you are serious in blogging and if you are looking for the best web hosting uk, then check out JustHost or this IPage Review. JustHost has been picked number one in the Best 10 Web Hosting. They offer great value for money and reliable service while at the same time, free templates and tutorials for newbies. They have everything that a blogger or publisher could possibly ask for. IPage on the other hand is great for new bloggers like me who would like to transfer from a free hosting like blogspot to her own web host. They have basic control panel interface that would otherwise confuse a more professional blogger but this is exactly what I need at the moment. I guess even in blogging, there are different strokes for different folks. If these two web hosts are not really what you need at the moment, you should check out the other available hosts at Top 10 Best UK Web Hosting. As I said, building your own website is much like building your own house. It is your very own space in the World Wide Web so you must show the best that you can.

I fell in love with this wallpaper in Chelsea when we were there last June. I loved it and I know that I would have to have this in my house somehow.

Too cute!

My Dream House Will Look like This!

I love browsing the internet and looking for ideas on how I want my house to look like. This is the latest that I was able to get from one of the model housing units that I visited. This is the look I am going for my house. Sorry, but I really cant remember where this is unit is, but if you know, please do let me know and I will credit the image properly.

I love the coordinated color of the house and the drop down lamp. I will have that in my dining room! My couch is in the same shade so I only need the table and the rug to complete the look. We will go for the cream color of the house but we can do the lighting that way because we will keep it plain. We still dream on putting a floor above. Anyway, this is how I envision my house to look like, and I know that we can do it!

Tenants from Hell

My mother in law is renting out a 2-door apartment and one of the tenants just moved out over the weekend. They were the tenants from hell and we were really not sad to see them go. They were the tenants whose visitors stole my sons bicycle! But now my mother in law has a problem. The old tenants refused to give her their new address and I doubt if they filed any change of address in any of their bills! And the bills and bills collectors are now coming in one by one. Of course, my mother in law would only pay the water and electric bills which will be covered by the one month rental deposit but the rest would remain unpaid. I pity those collectors who have to try and explain that they cannot find the tenants anymore. I tell you they were tenants from hell!

Of course, for the rest of us who does not need to run from bills and other obligations, filing a change of address is a must! It is useful in getting updated statements and records. And doing it is just a breeze now with Change of Adress.Org so check it out!

Modern Lighting - Redesigning With Discount Designer Lights

My friend Rona just moved into her dream house in Somerset in Pasig and we were there to visit last week. We were already there one time before the turnover and I was amazed at the difference that the designer lighting made. Rona opted for contemporary lighting and the ones she got have remote controls. The kids were happily showing off the different colors that the chandeliers made and we were all awed by the over-all effect. There was mood lighting too, which we used while we were thinking back over our college days and it did wonders to the ambience. I think the modern lighting set her back several thousands of pesos, but I know that it was well worth it. Aside from the chandeliers, Rona also have matching pendant lamps and wall mounted lamps that really compliment the room's style. We really loved what she did to the house and we told her so. I know that she is very proud of her house and I am very happy for her for realizing this dream. I know that I want this for my house as well because they do compliment the over look. I just need to save a little more and I know I can soon afford these discounted designer lights for my own dream house!

Let's Decorate!

Now that the family vacation to Boracay is done and life is returning back to normal, its time to visit the dream house once again. We will go there this weekend and work our schedule on painting the house and putting up the ceiling. I will also bring some appliances from our house, like the television set and the plastic storage boxes that I bought from the mall. If you give me a free hand and unlimited budget to decorate the house, I would fill it with homey and nice stuff. I now want white paint to emphasize the furniture and the simplicity and elegance of the house. I want clear and defined lighting. I want a pocket garden, or a zen garden. I want the latest gadgets and biggest and coolest entertainment system. I have it all planned in my mind and I can picture it as if I have them all in front of me. Of course that is, if money is not the issue. I can use credit cards with no annual fee but there are bad credit cards out there! I dont want to be exposed to unnecessary trouble especially now when I am not aware of new credit rules. But since money is the major consideration of all, I will get back to reality and think of ways to save up for those things instead At least, I don't need to think of ways to pay for those stuff once I paid them cash.

A Fund Raising for My House?

The idea for a fundraiser to build my house has entered my mind several times already during the past year. I know that there are easy fundraisers out there, but I believe that my need is not as urgent as others. That is what's stopping me from doing it. My sister's high school class did a magazine fundraising and donated the proceeds to their school to buy books and computers. I believe that to be a worthy cause and I gave some money quite generously. I dont know how people would feel when somebody asked them for money so she could build her house. I know that I will feel like I am being scammed, ha ha. But there are people who have been funding arts and I applaud their efforts. I think that if I were to make a fundraising for this house, it must be like the idea behind Gawad Kalinga where future owners of houses donate their time and effort to build their own and then help others build their houses too. I have joined in my company's Gawad Kalinga porjects and felt very good about myself for helping other people realize a dream of owning a decent house. I just hope that I can think of something creative and worthwhile to raise some funds for my own dream house.

Online Shopping Ideas

I was one of those people who are not yet comfortable with the idea of shopping online. I still prefer buying products that I have touched and smelled and felt to my hearts content. But I know that online shopping is a fact of life and it will be here to stay. I guess fighting it would be pointless, even futile. So when my friend told me that there are lots of incentives to shopping online, I told here to go ahead and convince me. She told me visit Savoo and check out the many money saving ideas I could learn from there. And I know she was right when I saw these online vouchers and was instantly hooked! I didn't know that there were so many discounts available for online shoppers. Had I known about these earlier, I would have bought all of my gadgets online. Even refutable sellers have online stores now so I know that it is silly to be afraid of buying items on the internet. And even shipping is almost always free when you buy them online. Now that I know these great online shopping ideas, I can also tell my friends about it and convince of the benefit of shopping online.

Naples Real Estate

When I woke up from a dream that I won the lotto jackpot, my first thought was to look up some listings of Naples real estate and choose the best that money can buy! I want a house near the beach so that I can wake up to the sound of rolling waves. At night, I want to be lulled to sleep by the waters gently lapping the beach. I am sure there are lots of available offerings at Naples Florida real estate especially if my dream that money is no object is true. Then again, it need not really be just a dream. There are condominiums and family communities that can be ideal for those who want to try living in Naples. For the truly rich, there are gated and luxury communities to choose from. It would be nice to live in this wonderful place of sun and sand and at the same time where all the comfort of living can be had. It would be like living in a vacation place where you will never want for the comforts of your own home. So I think I either get back to sleep and dream about this wonderful place all over again, or get to work so I can at least save enough t make that dream a reality.

I Miss my House!

I miss my house! Its been more than 2 months since we last visited but we are so busy we really cant go there now. Its just an hour away from where we live now on motorcycle, but we dont have the funds to buy the paint supplies and there is not much to do there yet anyway so we haven't visited. Maybe will share the painting pictures after next week. We hope to be able to do something by weekend of July 24. We are going to Boracay next weekend that's why. But I sure miss my house!

Painting the House Blue

Blue is my husband's lucky color for this year so we want that color for the house. It used to be green, but look what happened, ha ha. Anyway, since this is a dream house project and we are low on funds, we will paint the house ourselves! So here are some instructions from well-meaning friends:

How to paint your house:
1. Neutralize the cement using cement neutralizer. Let dry overnight.
2. Apply primer, flat enamel using paint brush or roller.
3. Apply masonry putty on cracks and uneven surfaces.
4. Sand as needed.
5. Apply first coating using gloss latex.
6. Sand again if needed.
7. Apply final coating.

This looks simple enough. Of course, you can do without the masonry putty and the sanding if you are low on funds. You can just apply your first coating twice and then you are done. Since this will be done by weekend warriors like us, we hope we do a good job!

Your Own Flash Website, Free!

If only building a dream house is as easy as building your own free website, then I won't be having this much trouble financially and emotionally. Did you know that there is this website builder, where you can build your own flash website even if you know nothing about programming and all that techie stuff? You just drag and drop and you have complete freedom on the designs. It is just so great to find out about something like this where you can flex your creative arm and surprise yourself with the results. I am heading there now to make for myself. But I am thinking if I should create one for my trying-hard photography skills, or for my online tips on parenting and family. Or maybe for my travels and great finds? I am just too excited and I will be sure to share my own flash website soon.

When I find a website that will help me build my house for free, then I know I am dreaming ;-)

Floor Tiles or Kisame

If you have only a limited amount of money and you have to choose only one, which would be your priority: the floor tiles (including the kitchen tops and restroom) or the ceiling or kisame?

Its now time for the kid's enrollment and we still have a lot of stuff to buy for them. But we still want to save some for the house and we are thinking which one to do first. Of course, I haven't started any costings yet. I am actually procrastinating, thinking that once I do the math I have to commit to construction again. Since it is so hot today, I am thinking of doing the ceiling first. The workers gave us a pakyaw estimate of P15,000 for the whole house. But I think the bathroom and kitchen looks so unfinished without the tiles. As I type this, and thinking budget-wise, I think we really can do the ceiling first. The floor tiles would us an arm and a leg again!

Dream Car

Other than the dream house, I also have a dream car. And when I dream, I dream big. So my pick is a Chrysler 300. This car has elegance and quality written all over it. Just looking at one can make me drool, ha ha! Should one choose to drive a Chrysler, one's self worth would increase a thousand fold! Wonder if my husband would look 100 times better when he drives one? But seriously, if I have the means to buy a car meant to last and make me feel good then this will be it. I mean, other than the comfort and mileage that this car has to offer, this is also a status symbol. While Toyotas are the working class car, a Chrysler gives you the impression of money and impeccable taste and that you belong to the rich and discerning class. And since there are a lot of Chrysler 300 accessories to choose from, then I would love this car more. I can customize or upgrade the interior and the lighting. I can customize the grills and trim to satisfy the obsessive person in me.

If I win the lottery today, can you guess what car I will buy today?

Home Building Done for Now!

After a month of construction, this is how our home looks like. We have two rooms, the rest room and kitchen and sink has been moved to the back, a new window has been installed and the electrical wiring was checked and properly installed.

Obviously, there are still lots of things to be done, namely: the ceiling, the paint, the floor tiles, the kitchen tiles and the bathrooms tiles and the appliances, and the cabinets and the kitchen cabinets and a whole lot more! The list goes on and on and on!

And again, the paint. The house doesn't look much without that coat of paint. But all in all, despite being wayyyyyy over budget, we are happy at how the dream house has progressed.

We have already an estimate on the ceiling and my husband and his friends will just take care of painting the house. But in the meantime, we have to enroll the kids first and see if we have enough money left to do more for our home.

Then I will put up a FOR RENT sign! Har, har har!

Mountains of Sierra Madre

These are the mountains of Sierra Madre in Rodriguez (formerly Montalban( Rizal which I took while riding on a motorcycle. The sky is clear and the mountain stand proud. But, not for long!

Look closely. Can you see the side of the mountain? Is it being quarried? Until now? I wonder how Bernardo Carpio would feel he were alive (and real)?

If we are to finally live here, I guess I have to take a more serious look on this issue.
